Wayne Stiles

Wayne Stiles was one of the 14 founding members of American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) in 1947 and served as a member for six years. Though Stiles was never formally trained in the practice of landscape architecture, he is considered one of the finest golf course architects of his era.

Wayne Stiles made the plans and then would go out to the site and construct it”.  Stiles’ approach was without a doubt part of the vanguard of golden age golf architects who promoted strategic design laid upon the most thrilling but economical landscapes to build golf. His design at Rutland is surely one of his finest layouts and was built during the prime of his career.

“In my mind, Rutland possesses the most wonderful mix of topographic interest presented along a highly walkable routing which is rare to find in the world of golf.  We have a classic track to be enjoyed by its members and guests on a daily basis.  I’m sure our original architect, Wayne Stiles, would glow with pride at the golf course which has lasted nearly 100 years, much of which remains in the image of how it was originally drawn.”

A closer look at the newly restored fairway bunkers on the 18th hole.  The diagonal orientation of both bunkers to the line of play was drawn by Stiles to offer a variety of playing strategies depending on the skill of each golfer on their way to the home green.
