“The Links” on Long Island
Rockville Links was designed by Devereux Emmet in 1924 and built out among the sandy stretch of geographical space known as the Hempstead Plain. Not far away on land with a similar character Emmett had built the Garden City Golf Club years earlier. Rockville has remained relatively unknown, due to the prominence and notoriety of “The Mens Club”, however in 2024 “The Links” are celebrating their centennial year and are proud to present a completely restored golf course. With the help of golf course superintendant, Luke Knuston, a united membership lead by Steve Smith, and great architectural leadership from Jim Urbina, Rockville links has become a restoration success story and a poster child of how projects of a historical nature should be approached.
My involvement with the project spanned a period from 2014-2019, each year coming back to Rockville to shape green surrounds, restore Emmet’s character to the bunkers and coordinate project construction.
During that time I absorbed an incredible amount of knowledge about Emmet, particularly about the problem of making a flat golf course challenging and fun. Rockville has this in spades!
